Chapter Ten

Suzanna met Heidi and Catherine near one of the unused Medical Bays. She had made sure none of the crew had any work scheduled in the area at this particular time. They were giggling like children as they snuck inside.

“Are you sure the medical replicator will work?” Heidi asked Catherine.

Catherine was a tall, slim, blonde who’d spent years working with the Peace Corps before she’d contracted a virus, which had attacked her kidneys. She arrived back home to Chicago determined not to allow her sister, Johanna, to donate one of her own kidneys. Johanna had told her a wild story about winged men from another planet, and how they were part alien. When she saw her own Ankidas’ wings and watched their mating flight, she became a believer.

Now she was the Chief Medical Officer on the Station, attaining the position because her three mates were the highest-ranking members of the Medical Cluster. The fact she was also female, guaranteed her the job in this Matriarchal society. So it was easy for her to gain access to the information the three of them needed to pull off this project.

“No worries, Heidi. I tested it out with those gardening tools you gave me,” she said.

“Really, it worked? Show us how you did it,” said Heidi as she and Suzanna eagerly followed Catherine over to the replicator.

“This Medical Bay is smaller than the main one, but it’s still big enough to have three replicators. So if we all work together, we should be able to get all the gifts made in time for Christmas. I think this was a great idea, Heidi,” said Catherine.

“Just call me Mrs. Santa, and you two are my elves,” Heidi said.

“Hey, I wanted to be Mrs. Santa. I’m too tall to be an elf,” said Suzanna.

“And too skinny to be Mrs. Santa,” said Catherine as she passed her hand over her baby bump. Because of Addie’s Nam-Nin powers, nearly every woman on the Space Station found herself pregnant. Marta and Cassandra were too young and not Joined, while Gilda, Carol and Glynnis were too old and also un-Joined.

“Catherine, I know we’ve all had our genes altered to enhance the Nephilim side of our DNA but I just had a weird thought. Will Glynnis be able to have children again? I just had this picture in my head of her and Addie both pregnant at the same time and their kids playing together,” said Suzanna.

“No, her aging is too far advanced. Glynnis said she’d like to be as healthy as possible. She would like to take advantage of the slower aging of a Nephilim, but not artificially lengthen her years. So we’ve cured her ailments, and her enhanced DNA will lengthen her life. She’ll lose most of her wrinkles and her hair will darken a little. However, she’ll still have gray hair and probably some crow’s feet at the corner of her eyes. She’ll be a middle-aged Nephilim.”
